Amazon To Begin Screening Third-Party Sellers Through Video Calls
Recently, Amazon has begun implementing a new strategy to validate the identity of third-party sellers to reduce the number of scammers and illegitimate sellers on their website. This is just one of the many ways in which the tech giant is combating fraud.
Essentially, to vet sellers, Amazon schedules a video call, wherein they ensure the potential seller’s ID matches the person and any corresponding documents they provided in their application. Additionally, third-party data sources provide further identification.
The program is being utilized in countries around the world, particularly in the United States, Japan, the United Kingdom, and China, wherein over 1,000 sellers have undergone this vetting process.
Of the move to switch to screening sellers from in-person to video conference amid the new coronavirus, an Amazon spokesperson said the following: “Amazon is always innovating to improve the seller experience so honest entrepreneurs can seamlessly open a selling account and start a business, while also proactively blocking bad actors. As we practice social distancing, we are testing a process that allows us to validate prospective sellers’ identification via video conferencing. This pilot allows us to connect one-on-one with prospective sellers while making it even more difficult for fraudsters to hide.”
