Amazon Prepares to Shut Down its Prime Now Delivery App
Instead of ordering fast delivery for groceries through Amazon’s Prime Now delivery apply, Amazon is directing their users to order through the Amazon app or website. Amazon plans to close the app permanently by the end of the year.
Some of the places you can have your groceries delivered from include both of Amazon’s grocery stores Amazon Fresh and Whole Foods. You can order your groceries via the Amazon app or website to have your goods delivered within a two-hour window.
Prime Now also provided its users with the ability to order from Bartell Drugs, a pharmacy chain located in Seattle, as well as Union Square Wine & Spirits, a liquor store located in New York City. Any third-party retailers or local stores such as these will also be moved over to the Amazon app and website, rather than being only available on Prime Now.
Stephenie Landry, vice president of grocery at Amazon said, “In 2014, I wrote a six-page document outlining a service that would allow customers to get last-minute items in about an hour,” Landry said in a blog post. “We even gave the project the internal code name ‘Houdini.’ In just 111 days, our team took the concept outlined in that six-page document and turned it into Prime Now, which became the foundation for Amazon’s ultrafast grocery and same-day delivery businesses.”
Landry says, “To make this experience even more seamless for customers, we are moving the experience from a separate Prime Now app onto the Amazon app and website so customers can shop all Amazon has to offer from one convenient location.”
This transition has been underway for some time now with efforts to direct their customers to the Amazon app with direct links embedded in the Prime Now app. Places that the Prime Now app is officially no longer available include Singapore, Japan, and India. Prime Now is still available in more than 5,000 cities. Amazon has even dedicated Prime Now warehouses to fulfill orders, so the closure of this app is no small feat.
Closing Prime Now is just one of the steps Amazon has recently taken to streamline its grocery offerings. Other actions Amazon has taken include closing its Prime Pantry services which delivered nonperishable groceries as well as rebranding Go Grocery to Amazon Fresh.
