Amazon Looking for 2nd Headquarters

Amazon Looking for 2nd Headquarters

As Amazon grows, so does its need for employees and space. Today, the company made headlines because it is looking for a location to have a second headquarters location. The new location is expected to need to hire 50,000 new employees to run the headquarters, which is also being referred to as HQ2. Though a city hasn’t been chosen yet, it will be somewhere in North America. What we know so far is that it probably won’t be in where the first headquarters is in Seattle, but it will be “equal,” in all other facets according to CEO Jeff Bezos.

So far, the requirements of the new location are as follows:

  • A population of 1 million residents or more
  • Must be a business-friendly environment
  • Needs to be able to not only attract workers but also retain them

Though the location will not be announced until next year, Amazon is only welcoming bids for the office space in the new location until October 19, 2017. Not everyone is thrilled about the idea of having an Amazon headquarters in their hometown, as it resulted in mass gentrification in Seattle, which has very high rates of homelessness and a housing shortage. However, the headquarters will bring in 50,000 jobs, so it has pros and cons.

It will be interesting to see which cities make bids to allow an Amazon headquarters to call it home. It will also be interesting to see the inevitable backlash that residents of whichever city is chosen will have about bringing in such a major corporation.
