Amazon Sellers in the U.S. Are Now Required to Display Their Business Name and Address
Amazon has recently announced to sellers that they are now required to display their business name and address on their storefront page. The announcement reads as follows: “Beginning on September 1st, 2020, we will display a seller’s business name and address on their Amazon.com Seller Profile page. For individuals, we will display the individual name and address. This is consistent with Seller Profile pages across Amazon stores in Europe, Japan, and Mexico.” The announcement goes on to say, “We are making this change to ensure there is a consistent baseline of seller information to help customers make informed shopping decisions.”
One of the main reasons that Amazon has made this decision is because it allows customers to more easily seek legal action against negligent or malicious product manufacturers. For example, if someone purchases a product from an Amazon seller and that product is defective and they are injured as a result, they can now directly sue the seller responsible.
That being said, Amazon’s decision did not come out of thin air; the U.S. Department of Homeland Security released a document in January called “Combating Trafficking in Counterfeit and Pirated Goods,” which, at one point, states that “Platforms should implement additional measures to inform consumers, prior to the completion of a transaction, of the identity of storefront owners and/or those responsible for fulfilling a transaction.”
