Sarasota, Florida has recently received a lot of attention after Amazon announced it will be building a 120,000 square foot distribution center there. Though construction is going to cost somewhere around $16 million, the warehouse is expected to bring hundreds of jobs to the county, something many residents are looking forward to.
The mayor of Venice, Ron Feinsod said in a statement concerning the move by Amazon, “My initial thought is ‘jobs.’ That’s a good thing.”
Additionally, Mel Thomas, who is the economic development manager for North Port said, “There’s explosive growth. Where we are — the whole area of Sarasota County and bleeding into Charlotte (County) — is nothing but opportunity along I-75.” This is a sentiment that many agree upon, as Amazon will be facing some serious competition in the area, including PGT Innovations and Tervis.
Rogan Donnely, who is the president and owner of Tervis sounded optimistic about the move. In a statement, Donnely said, “The more that we can build our area and build industry, the more reasons there are to attract talent for manufacturing and technology. If we can create those jobs, I feel comfortable that it will only bring more talented people to the area to fill those positions. Especially with a strong brand like Amazon — people will learn this is a great place to live and a great place to have a family.”
That being said, the application is still under review, though it is expected to see approval fairly soon.
