Homeless Shelter to Be Included in Amazon’s New Seattle Site

Homeless Shelter to Be Included in Amazon’s New Seattle Site

Recently, Amazon announced a plan to expand its presence in Seattle, Washington with a new, high-tech office space. Amazon’s Global Corporate Headquarters are located in Seattle, so it is no surprise that they are looking to build another office space in this city. It just announced that it will work to combat Seattle’s growing homelessness issue by committing over 47,000 square feet of that new space to work with Mary’s Place, a network of homeless shelters for families. This is one way Amazon plans to increase its charitable work in local communities. Amazon hopes that their own employees will take some time to volunteer at the shelter and get involved in the local community.

The corporation plans to begin construction on the property in downtown Seattle in fall of 2017 and plans to open in 2020. The shelter plans to have enough room for 220 people or roughly 65 families. Mary’s Place will also allow residents to keep their pets in the shelter. The shelter will be a permanent fixture in Amazon’s new office space, taking about half the space of the building. This is part of Amazon’s attempt to work towards reducing homelessness in Seattle.
