Amazon has announced that it will be offering to pay 100% of college tuition for its Unites States hourly employees. This means that Amazon is offering to pay for 750,000 college tuitions. This will include the cost of college tuition, textbooks, and fees after 90 days of employment, starting in January.
Dave Clark, CEO of Worldwide Consumer at Amazon said in a statement, “Amazon is now the largest job creator in the US, and we know that investing in free skills training for our teams can have a huge impact for hundreds of thousands of families across the country. We launched Career Choice almost ten years ago to help remove the biggest barriers to continuing education – time and money – and we are now expanding it even further to pay full tuition and add several new fields of study.”
Amazon will also be covering GED programs, high school diploma programs, and English as a second language certifications for its employees. This offer is open to operations workers including hourly employees in Amazon’s warehouses and distribution centers. This benefit is expected to apply to hundreds of educational institutions across the United States. This is a tactic by Amazon to increase their education benefits as an incentive to lure workers to their company. Amazon is also offering a sign-on bonus for new employees worth up to $3,000 in some areas of the country.
However, Amazon will not be spending $50,000+ on Ivy League educations for its employees. Instead, they will assist its employees in attending colleges such as Alamo Colleges which is a network of community colleges in Texas.
Employees will be allowed to continue to enroll in classes as long as they are employed at Amazon. They will be able to spend as much or as little time to complete their education as their schedule and annual budget allow. There will be an annual maximum where the tuition will be prepaid up to which will include book fees.
This Career Choice program is available to full and part-time blue badge employees of Amazon which includes all hourly non-expect FC, CS, corporate, AWS, Amazon Fresh Stores, Amazon Books, Amazon 4-star, Amazon Pop Up, Amazon Go and certain retail and eligible subsidiary associates.
